Contemporary, reportage, photojournalism, traditional… many buzzwords are used these days but what do they mean? If you ask a hundred wedding photographers you’ll probably get a hundred different answers. Here’s what we think:
Contemporary wedding photography: A modern set of images taken with a creative flair: something a little different, and much less ‘stuffy’ than the old school of traditional wedding photography from years ago. Images should be high quality and also exhibit a modern twist – something you perhaps wouldn’t expect to find in your parents’ wedding albums!
Reportage, documentary or photojournalism: popular phrases indeed. The true photojournalist wedding photographer has little or no interaction on the wedding at all, simply recording the event as a ‘fly on the wall’. This is great if you really like the hands off approach – but be careful this isn’t simply confused with simply not shooting formal photos - or worse still – simple snapshots from an enthusiastic amateur. A skilled photojournalist will capture the real moments of your wedding day as they occur, still carefully composing the image, isolating the subject, and making a perfect exposure, often under very difficult circumstances. These skills take years to perfect and should not be confused with stumbling across the odd good photo by chance! You’ll want to know that your photographer can consistently achieve exceptional results all day long including when the light is bad and the action is flowing!
Traditional wedding photography: This is most likely what Mum wants and expects to see from her wedding photographer… formal poses, if done correctly should be pleasing to the eye, well exposed and provide a good record of who attended your wedding day.
